Brookhaven Treatment and Learning Center Open Position

1:1 School Behavioral Support

SEARCH REOPENED--We are seeking an individual with education in education, psychology or related field to provide support for a student with emotional disabilites in our alternative classroom. The right candidate will have experience/ training in supporting students with PTSD, ADHD and reactive attachment disorder. We need someone who is capable of guiding the student through problem solving, de-escalation techniques and therapeutic support. The ideal candidate will have the ability to collaborate with classroom teachers and clinical/ residential counseling staff to support the student during the school day. The position is available immediately. The position is 32.5 hours / week 7:45 am to 2:15 pm Mon- Fri., on a school calendar. Summer employment includes 6 weeks of extended year services.

 

Job Title: Individual Behavioral / Learning Support

Supervisory Relationships: Lead Teacher

Qualifications: A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field. Experience in working with behavioral/ emotional disabled students or related training is also required.

 

Responsibilities Overview: The Behavioral/ Learning Support will ensure that the student will receive support in IEP defined areas and assist with educational experiences that help the child make progress towards goals as established in the child’s IEP. The Behavior / Learning Support will receive curriculum and activities from the classroom teachers and Special Education Coordinator. The Behavior/ Learning Support will be responsible to coordinate areas of needed support with the Special Education Coordinator and classroom teachers in the Brookhaven Learning Center. The Behavior/ Learning Support will also provide feedback to teachers about the student’s progress behaviorally and in the implementation of the curriculum the student. Specific Duties:

 

1. Ensure that the student will receive support in IEP defined areas and assist with educational experiences

  • Review IEP goals for the student with teachers monthly
  • Participate in activity planning to ensure alignment with IEP goals
  • Identify areas of accommodation for the student in compliance with IEP
  • Work with students 1:1 on difficult content or skills areas as defined by education team and IEP
  • Participate in evaluation of each student in terms of initial needs and progress towards IEP goals
2. Coordinate areas of needed support with the Special Education Coordinator and classroom teachers
  • Work with teachers to support curriculum and activities that are appropriate to the child’s IEP
  • Makes recommendations on design, furnishings and equipment to be used in implementing IEP activities
  • Provides behavioral/ emotional support in classroom when needed
  • Assists with evaluation of progress towards IEP goals and make recommendations for updates to these goals
  • Works with the Teaching Team to maintain standards of individual student behavior and safety for students in the school program
3. Provide feedback to teachers about the student’s progress behaviorally and in the implementation of the curriculum the student
  • Reports back to teachers about the student’s progress in activities and IEP goals, daily
  • Participates in quarterly team meetings about the student at both at BLC and at sending schools.
  • Communicates weekly with the Special Education Coordinator at BLC to update progress in behavioral and academic goals
  • Provides feedback to teachers for coding of IEP goals

Will perform other duties as requested by the Lead Teacher or Director

Job Title:  Special Education Coordinator

Supervisor: Lead Teacher and Executive Director

Responsibilities Overview:  The Special Education Coordinator will ensure that students will receive instruction in IEP defined areas and provide educational experiences that help the child make progress towards goals as established in the child's IEP.  The Coordinator will be responsible to coordinate with the Lead Teacher, all special education services with sending schools, Brookhaven Learning Center and VT State Department of Education.  The coordinator will also participate in colleagueship and staff activities and provide leadership and supervision to teachers implementing curriculum to special needs students.  The Special Education Coordinator may also serve as a Classroom Teacher with a small group of students.

Specific Duties:

Ensure that students will receive instruction in IEP defined areas

  • Provide group, small group and direct 1:1 instruction,
  • Maintains standards for individual student behavior and safety for all students,
  • Counsels students in identifying and dealing with their academic challenges,
  • Collaborate with teaching colleagues to coordinate subject teaching and curricula,
  • Prepare students to meet assessment standards as directed by the State of Vermont
  • Will keep organized student files,
  • Will participate in meetings designed to update the Lead Teacher on student progress,
  • Submit timely, accurate paperwork including lesson plans, monthly reports, student observations and other reporting paperwork as required,
  • Provide instruction in academic subjects, utilizing a wide range of teaching methods, materials and equipment, including reading materials, instructional games and resource materials,
  • Review IEP goals for each student with teachers monthly,
  • Oversee curriculum planning to ensure alignment with IEP goals,
  • Identify areas of accommodation for students in compliance with IEP,
  • Direct and work with students' 1:1 support staff on skill areas as defined by education team and IEP,
  • Participate in evaluation of each student in terms of initial needs and progress towards IEP goals,
  • Implement assessment mechanisms as part of quarterly evaluations and annual IEP review needs,

Provide educational experiences that help the child make progress towards goals as established in the child's IEP

  • Collaborates with the teaching team to create curriculum and activities that are appropriate to the child's IEP,
  • Makes recommendations on design, furnishings and equipment to be used in implementing IEP activities,
  • Provides behavioral/ emotional support in classroom when needed
  • Assists with evaluation of progress towards IEP goals and make recommendations for updates to these goals,
  • Remains current in information and research about special services programs by reading education journals, attending workshops, courses, and meetings with other special education professionals.

Will be responsible to coordinate with the Lead Teacher, all special education services with sending schools, Brookhaven Learning Center and VT State Department of Education

  • Participates in team meetings about students both at BLC and at sending schools.
  • Will coordinate the distribution, application and compilation of annual standardized tests required by the State of Vermont
  • Communicates monthly with the Special Education departments at all sending schools to update progress in behavioral and academic goals
  • Attends meetings outside of school hours as needed

Will also participate in colleagueship and staff activities and will provide  leadership and supervision to teachers and support staff who are implementing curriculum to special needs students

  • The Coordinator will ensure staff complies with all applicable State and Federal regulations and laws including those that apply to educating students with disabilities,
  • Attend  Summer Program to oversee curriculum and activities,
  • Attends all in-service days with teaching team,
  • Leads 1 in-service day training in a special education topic pertinent to the needs of the students served,
  • Communicates daily with Lead Teacher about progress of students
  • Meets with each teacher weekly to review lesson plans and offer suggestions and feedback,
  • Provide supervision to aids, substitutes and residential counselors,
  • Participate in in-service trainings and other staff meetings,
  • Pursue professional development opportunities with approval by the Lead Teacher,
  • Attending professional society meetings, seminars, courses, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field of education. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field by reading journals and publications

Will perform other duties as requested by the Director or Lead Teacher.

Job Requirements
